Call For Hockey Fans To Volunteer

As the start of an international hockey competition draws near, officials from the CARHA World Cup are looking for local volunteers.

The event is expected to attract more than 130 teams from 15 different countries to Windsor-Essex in April.

"We have teams from Russia, Kazakhstan, Scotland, Sweden," says coordinator Reuben Greenspoon. "They're coming from all over."

Greenspoon would like to get between 30 and 40 volunteers to help out at the WFCU Centre, South Windsor Recreation Centre, Tecumseh Arena and the Vollmer Culture and Recreation Complex in LaSalle during the day.

Windsor was one of 37 communities that applied to host the championship and it's expected to generate up to $15-million in economic activity between April 3 and April 10.

"We have about 6,500 hotel room nights throughout the week," says Greenspoon. "You know, they're spending money at the bars. They're spending money on the winery tours, Canadian Club Brand Centre."

The CARHA World Cup has been held every four years since its inception in 1996. Other host cities include Toronto, Vancouver, and Quebec City.
