Residents upset by death of owlet in an alley

Some east Windsor residents are looking for answers after someone knocked two owlets out of their nest over the weekend.

The nest was in a tree in an alley between Westcott Road and Aubin Road, not far from crews that have been working lately.

Deanna Heyton said her dog woke her up Sunday morning, and she found one owlet on the ground but still alive.

"My dog was out in the backyard and kept barking, so I went out, and in the alley, there was an owl," said Heydon.

Right away, she knew the young bird needed attention. When calls to the Erie Wildlife Rescue were not immediately answered, she and her husband put the Barn Owl in a box and took it to the Lauzon Veterinary Hospital.

A second owlet was found dead hours later.

Heyton admits the discovery has shaken her.

"There are not very many owls around, and to see that, it's disgusting," she said. "Somebody knew that nest was there, and they proceeded to cut the branches down anyway."

She and her neighbour, Robert Grass, called the City of Windsor and were told it did not have any crews in the alley recently. Similarly, Enwin claimed not to have anyone working there.

Grass and Heyton both noted MNSi was also working in installing high-speed internet cables. BlackburnNews.com has reached out to the company but has not heard back from its representative as of publication.
