Two confirmed dead in Leamington house explosion

The Ontario Fire Marshal's Office has confirmed that two people are dead following a weekend house explosion.

Crews from the Leamington Fire Department were called to a residence on Marentette Beach shortly after 5:30 p.m. Sunday, determining that an explosion had occurred and the structure had been engulfed in flames.

Manny Garcia, a supervisor with the OFM, confirmed the discovery of the two bodies to BlackburnNewsWindsor.com Monday afternoon.

"As a result of that explosion, two individuals have been found deceased within the rubble of that home," said Garcia.

Garcia added that a coroner was on scene Monday and the remains were due to be transported for a post-mortem.

Marentette Beach is located on the eastern end of the peninsula, just north of the boundary to Point Pelee National Park.

Leamington Fire Chief Andrew Baird had tweeted Sunday evening that multiple units had been dispatched to the scene. Photos placed on social media showed severe damage to the property.

Garcia said the investigation is in the early stages. The two people found dead have not been identified.

Anyone with information concerning this explosion who has not already spoken with investigators is asked to call Ontario Provincial Police at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
