Possible flooding in Leamington

The Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA) is advising that the shoreline of Leamington between Wheatley Harbour and the tip of Point Pelee could have flooding because of high wind and waves.

ERCA said the north and east shores of Pelee Island also have the potential to be flooded. The authority said this entire shoreline was severely flooded in the spring with many of the shore protection structures and properties being severely damaged. They are vulnerable to further damage as a result of Monday's gusty wind and high waves. ERCA said there is the possibility for near shore erosion with wave overtopping and spray in the areas of direct wave attack. There is also the possibility of further breakwall damage.

The authority said there is a possibility for isolated heavy downpours throughout the region and that could make standing water conditions worse in low lying areas near the shore.

ERCA said people should take extra caution and avoid shoreline areas because these conditions can be very dangerous.

This advisory is in effect until Tuesday night.
