Detroit ballpark worker fired, arrested for spitting in food

Some Detroit Tigers fans almost got more than baseball and atmosphere after an incident involving an employee.

The Detroit Free Press reported Monday that a food worker at Comerica Park, working a Little Caesars Pizza concession at the ballpark Friday night, was videotaped by another employee spitting into pizzas, then putting pizza sauce on the dough. The paper reports that the video was taken by a 17-year-old employee who said that the concession worker had told him he would be tampering with the food.

The video of the incident, which the employee shared on his Instagram account, has since gone viral and was shared thousands of times.

The employee told the Free Press that he was planning to take the video to management, but when he did so, he said on his Instagram that he was fired for leaving his workstation without permission.

The Tigers use Sportservice to provide food and concessions for events at Comerica Park. The company provided a written statement saying that the concession worker was fired and arrested by Detroit police.

"As soon as we became aware through social media of potential food tampering, we immediately closed that food stand, disposed of all the product and contacted the Detroit Police Department," said Sportservice in the statement. "We have been told by police that the worker has been arrested and is in custody, pending charges."

Detroit police have not directly confirmed that the worker was arrested, and Sportservice did not disclose where in the ballpark the concession stand in question was located.

The Tigers were playing a game against the Kansas City Royals and were celebrating Fan Appreciation Weekend as well as Irish Heritage Night.

Anyone who attended the game on Friday night who may have seen something unusual, or wishes to pass along additional information, should contact Detroit Sportservice at (313) 471-2600 or Detroit police.
