Officials in Amherstburg are launching two investigations after someone leaked confidential information about plans to have the Windsor Police Service take over policing in the town.
Mayor Aldo DiCarlo told BlackburnNews.com the internal breach of confidentiality happened sometime between a closed-door council meeting on September 10, and when an email that made the leak obvious surfaced three days later.
Even though the leak was from someone at the closed-door meeting to someone else on the town's police services board, DiCarlo does not believe it will jeopardize plans for the take over on January 1.
Just because the leak was from one town body to another does not mean it is not being taken seriously.
"It was an appropriate in-camera meeting. That information needed to be maintained confidentially. It was not, so now the people responsible should be held accountable," said DiCarlo Tuesday.
One investigation carried out by a third party investigator will look at town administration. The second will be conducted by the integrity commissioner who only has oversight over town councillors.
"We're going to try and get this done as quickly as possible," DiCarlo said. "But when it comes to the integrity commissioner, we obviously share him with other municipalities, so it'll be up to him to decide the priority of the issue."
The investigators will recommend penalties for the breach.
