A recall has affected over a million pickup trucks and SUVs sold by General Motors in North America.
The Detroit-based automaker is recalling over 1.2 million SUVs and full-size pickups because of a concern with the steering mechanism, which may increase the likelihood of a crash. GM says the electric power steering on the affected vehicles can fail for a moment and suddenly return, mainly during low-speed maneuvers such as turning. This could result in steering difficulties for the driver. A total of 96,000 of the vehicles were sold in Canada.
GM says there have been 30 crashes because of the defect, with two injuries. No deaths have been reported, according to Crain's Automotive News.
All of the vehicles are from the 2015 model year. The recall covers the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks. SUVs involved include the Chevy Tahoe, Chevy Suburban, Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV; and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL.
The automaker says dealers have been provided with updated software packages to deal with the problem. Owners of these vehicles will be notified and the upgrade will be provided for free.
