Waves top six feet on Lake Erie

There is some flooding in eastern Leamington, but a spokesman for the Essex Region Conservation Authority has said it is not as bad as it was last spring.

Areas like Coterie Park saw water flow over the roads Sunday as the wind blew six-foot waves up on Lake Erie. The wind is still blowing out of the northeast, but at least it is not blowing as strong as it was.

Tim Byrne, director of watershed management services, told BlackburnNews.com it could have been worse.

"Starting levels [on Lake Erie] started lower, and the wind speed and direction modified quite dramatically throughout the weekend," he said.

Roads in the area are open.

"There's a couple of areas where water is trickling across the road, but the road right now, at this point, is not flooded," explained Byrne.

An earlier flood warning included the eastern shoreline of Leamington and the north and easterly shore of Pelee Island. A flood watch, now in effect until Tuesday morning, included Essex, Kingsville, and Amherstburg along Lake Erie, and eastern Windsor, Tecumseh, and Lakeshore on Lake St. Clair.

Last spring, parts of eastern Leamington saw significant flooding because of high winds and higher lake levels.
