Windsor's First Female Mayor Passes Away

The first woman to hold the office of mayor in the city of Windsor has passed away.

Windsor's 29th mayor, Elizabeth Kishkon, passed away on Wednesday.  She served as the city's mayor from November 1983 to November 1985.

Current Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens said flags at city sites will be lowered as a sign of respect for Kishkon's contributions.

"Sad to learn of the passing of Elizabeth Kishkon," said Dilkens in a Tweet. "Windsor is a better place because of Elizabeth. My deepest condolences go to the entire Kishkon family."

Kishkon was born in Oshawa in the early 1930s and was raised in England before moving back to Canada in 1948.

During her time as mayor, Kishkon set up a council of representatives of youths from local high schools and in October 1984, she oversaw Queen Elizabeth II's visit to Windsor.

Kishkon was appointed to the Ontario Human Rights Commission following her tenure as mayor, and also received an honorary degree from the University of Windsor in 1986. In September 2017, a park near Banwell Rd. in Windsor was named in Kishkon’s honour.
