Ontario Pumps Brakes On Driving Fee Increases

Ontario is freezing some driver fees but not licence plate renewal fees, at least not yet.

Those fees were not set to increase next month and will continue to be $120 for now.

Premier Doug Ford and Minister of Transportation John Yakabuski announced on Tuesday that Ontario is freezing several driver fees that were to increase on September 1.

“People are fed up with paying more and more every time they need to renew their licence or take a driving test,” said Premier Ford. “This will make life more affordable for drivers right across the province. This is the latest example of our government putting money back where it belongs — in the pockets of hard-working Ontarians.”

"License plate renewal fees were not scheduled to increase in September. The Government is freezing the fees that were scheduled to increase at that time," according to a government official. "Decisions surrounding future fee increases to licence plate renewals will be made in the future."

The following fees are being frozen:

- Road and knowledge tests for all driver’s licence classes.

- Fees to get and renew driver’s licences.

- New driver’s licence and five-year driver’s licence renewal will remain at $90.

- Knowledge test for G1, M1, driving instructor and air brake (Z endorsement) licences will stay at $15.75.

- Knowledge test for A, B, C, D, E and F licences will be frozen at $23.25.

- G1 and M1 exit road test will remain at $52.50.

- G2, M2 and driving instructor exit road test will stay at $89.25.

- A, B, C, D, E and F road test will be frozen at $96.75.
