Plaque Honouring Fallen Windsor Officer Swiped

Windsor police are looking to recover a plaque honouring one of their fallen comrades.

In a statement released Friday, police say officers were called to the Chrysler Building on the University of Windsor campus Tuesday on a theft report.

A memorial plaque memorialising slain Constable John Atkinson had been stolen from a wall in the hallway. University staff had noticed broken glass all over the place and believed that the theft happened sometime over the Civic Holiday weekend, according to Windsor Police Constable Andy Drouillard.

The plaque was described as a shadowbox containing a photo of Atkinson's funeral, which took place at the university's St. Denis Centre in 2006. A replica badge was displayed in one corner.

Atkinson was shot to death in the line of duty in 2006, while responding to a call at a convenience store on Seminole St.

Anyone with information concerning the whereabouts of the plaque, or regarding any suspicious or unusual activity around the Chrysler Building over the long weekend, is urged to call Windsor police at (519) 255-6700, ext. 4350. Anonymous tips can be phoned into Crime Stoppers at (519) 258-TIPS (8477) or submitted online.
