MoneySense Best Places To Live: How Local Towns Fared

After placing in 344th place in MoneySense Magazine's ranking of the best places to live in Canada last year, Windsor has moved far up the list.

The magazine looked at 415 cities and scored them on ten criteria including economy, affordability, crime, weather, and culture. Each criterion is worth a percentage of the city's overall mark.

Housing affordability is worth just 7% of that pie. Windsor placed tenth in that category last year, and despite not even making the top 100 this time around still managed to improve its ranking from 344th in the overall picture in 2017 to in 215th this year.

LaSalle placed 43rd for affordability with the average cost of buying a home at $374,053. Lakeshore came in 71st, and Tecumseh was 73rd.

When it came to property taxes, the survey found Windsor's 2.68% good enough to place 47th on the list. Leamington outperformed the city and came in 23rd, while Kingsville just made the 100, coming in 96th.

If you are looking for the best weather, Leamington and Kingsville earned top marks. Having 123 days on average with a temperature above 20 C won Kingsville eighth place in Ontario and Leamington ninth.

Overall, LaSalle performed best in Essex County, despite falling from 26th place in the 2017 survey to 80th this year.

Amherstburg had the lowest marks in Essex County falling from 253rd overall to 331st place, and Essex was not included in the survey.

The top three cities in the 2018 overall ranking are Oakville, Ottawa and Russell. Ottawa and Oakville tied for first place in 2017.

Three Nova Scotia communities ranked at the bottom of the list; East Hants, Colchester Subdivision B, and Colchester Subdivision C.
