Windsor Candidates Urged To Consider An Auditor General

A Windsor man wants candidates in the upcoming municipal election to pledge to hire an auditor general if elected.

A public meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday night at Kurley's AC pub on Erie St. to allow candidates who are in favour of an auditor general to explain how they believe bringing one into the fold will help the city.

Howard Weeks, who is organizing the event, has invited all of the candidates for mayor and city council to take part. As of late Monday night, nine had agreed to participate.

Weeks says on the event's Facebook page that the format of the meeting will be straightforward.

"The agenda... will include short talks by each candidate about how they believe that the reinstatement of an independent auditor general will benefit the city, and how one of their platform items can be furthered by an AG," says Weeks.

Later in the evening, candidates will be made available to meet with people individually to discuss any issue they want.

Weeks says this meeting is to encourage Windsor voters to become educated on how an auditor general could benefit the city and to vote for candidates who have gone on record as supporting the hiring of an AG.

Windsor City Council considered the matter in 2015 when a divided council voted against the hiring of a local auditor general. Mayor Drew Dilkens was the deciding vote against. Instead, council favoured lobbying the province of Ontario to set up a province-wide AG office and budget money for it.

Weeks says this time, they want to hold councillors accountable and follow through with the creation of a local AG office.

The meeting is scheduled from 7pm to 9pm Tuesday. Complete information is available on the event's Facebook page.
