Marchionne In Intensive Care, According To Reports

A health crisis affecting the former CEO of Fiat-Chrysler has become more serious, according to published reports.

Sergio Marchionne, who was replaced this week as CEO of the automaker, is in intensive care at a hospital in Switzerland, as reported by the Italian newspaper La Stampa and relayed by Crain's Automotive News. The report called his condition "grave" and "irreversible". His family is also reportedly at his side and hospital officials were not giving out additional information.

Another Italian newspaper, La Repubblica, said on Sunday that the 66-year-old had been in a coma throughout the weekend and was on a ventilator. Doctors had tried in vain to wean Marchionne off the ventilator.

The Italian-born Marchionne, who lived for many years in Canada and attended the University of Windsor, suffered serious complications after shoulder surgery earlier this week. Based on the sudden turn in his health, the Fiat-Chrysler board named longtime Jeep executive Mike Manley as CEO.

Marchionne had planned to step down as CEO early in 2019.
