Hatfield, Gretzky Named Deputy Speakers

Windsor-Essex is getting a higher profile in the new Ontario Legislature.

Windsor West MPP Lisa Gretzky and Windsor-Tecumseh's Percy Hatfield have been named deputy speakers in the new legislature. The appointments were called during a rare summer sitting at Queen's Park this week.

The two MPPs, who easily won re-election in their ridings last month, were appointed by NDP Leader Andrea Horwath in her role as Official Opposition Leader. They are two of the three NDP members being given the deputy speaker's position.

Just like any past Speaker, current officeholder Ted Arnott cannot physically preside over every session. Hatfield and Gretzky will be responsible for presiding over debates on the floor.

Hatfield says he understands what will be expected of him with this role.

"I am well aware of the immense responsibilities of serving as the deputy speaker of the Legislative Assembly, and look forward to serving the house in the same fairness and impartiality that I have served the communities of Windsor-Tecumseh over the last five years," says Hatfield in a press release.

Gretzky is confident her experience has prepared her for the position.

"I'm honoured to have been appointed to such a notable role," says Gretzky. "As the Legislative Assembly's referee during house proceedings, I hope to ensure decorum is maximised during debate and that we maintain the highest levels of civility and courteousness."

Gretzky had her first turn in the Speaker's chair Thursday. Hatfield will preside sometime next week.
