Flooding Possible Along Shoreline

The Essex Region Conservation Authority has issued a flood watch for areas of Windsor-Essex due to a storm heading east of the region.

The conservation authority says the system tracking over the region is currently generating east/south east winds with wind speeds of 15 to 25km with gusts up to 40kms. These winds will initially affect most of the south coastal reaches of the region. Areas impacted on Saturday are Pelee Island, Amherstburg, Essex, Kingsville, and Leamington.

The storm may cause damaging waves, shoreline erosion, and shoreline flooding.

This system will continue to affect the region for the remainder of Saturday, but it will start to change on Sunday. North/east winds will shift and strengthen, ultimately blowing out of the east/north east. For Sunday, all coastal areas of the region may be affected.

East/north east winds have the potential to cause nearshore wave damage and erosion for all the municipalities identified above, including Lakeshore, Tecumseh, and the east limits of Windsor on Lake St. Clair.

The wind setup on both Lakes Erie and St. Clair will also elevate water levels in the Detroit River. Elevated levels can cause shoreline erosion, as well as break-wall and dock damage. All craft and small vessels should be properly secured and or removed.

There is rain and heavy isolated thunderstorms in the forecast, but conditions are dry and water channels are low. Isolated thunderstorms could create standing water some areas.

Children, pets, and livestock should be kept away from the affected areas.
