Very Rare Kitten Up For Adoption

The Windsor/Essex County Humane Society says it has a very rare type of kitten up for adoption, a male tortoiseshell.

Tortoiseshells are known for their black and orange fur.

The gene that controls that marking is only found on the X chromosome. While female cats have two X chromosomes, males have XY chromosomes. Usually, the marking is only found in female cats.

For a male cat to have orange and black fur, he would have to have two X chromosomes and a Y. It only happens once in every 3,000 cat births.

"Klinger" and his siblings were brought to the humane society by a good Samaritan who found them in Leamington.

All of the kittens are looking for a good home, but humane society officials anticipate an unusually high level of interest in Klinger. Applications to adopt him will be taken until the end of the day on Saturday. The ultimate adopter will be chosen randomly.
