Windsor Mayor Frustrated Over Tunnel Delay

The mayor of Windsor is upset that the opening of the Windsor-Detroit tunnel is being delayed and the city is being kept in the dark.

Mayor Drew Dilkens says the ceiling needs more work than anticipated and the tunnel, which was to be open by now, won't be opened until the fall.

Dilkens says he's frustrated and more communication is needed from the U.S. side.

"It's been very frustrating dealing with that side of the tunnel and trying to get information and the board has expressed to the U.S. side that we have concerns," says Dilkens.

Dilkens says the city is just a funding partner and the Detroit side of the tunnel is managing the $20-million project.

The tunnel has been closed since October to replace the ceiling.

He also says previous claims by the Detroit side that the tunnel is on time are misleading.

Dilkens wants the tunnel open as soon as possible because the casino and commuters depend on it.

"Our concern has been about the lack of communication from the U.S. side. We're partners in a very important strategic asset and we haven't felt that we have been partners in this particular project," the mayor says.

Dilkens says the longer the tunnel is closed, the more revenue is lost by the city.

"Clearly there is an impact. We have quantified the impact and we know what it is and we have let the U.S. side know that we think it's unacceptable that this has been taking so long," Dilkens says.
