U.S. Agency Predicts Toxic Algal Bloom In Lake Erie

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in the U.S. and its research partners in the western Lake Erie basin predict a harmful algal bloom in the lake this summer.

The bloom of cyanobacteria is expected to be smaller than last year's bloom, but more significant than a mild bloom in the summer of 2016, and measure about 6 on the severity index.

That index is based on the bloom's biomass, the amount of bacteria over a sustained period.

For comparison, blooms in 2011 and 2015, the largest over the past 16 years, measured 10 and 10.5.

Last year's bloom measured 8, while one in 2014 that triggered a tap water ban in Toledo, Ohio measured 7.

This year's bloom is expected to range in size throughout the summer and early fall. Many areas will not be affected, but in those that are, the water could be hazardous to swimmers and pets.
