Windsor Roofing Company Fined $100K Following Worker's Death

A Windsor roofing company is facing a significant fine after a worker suffered a fatal fall while working on the roof of a Goodlife Fitness on Dougall Ave.

The 53-year-old man was performing flat roof repairs on July 15, 2016, when he fell through an opening in the roof to the floor below. The man was rushed to hospital but later succumbed to his injuries and died less than two weeks later.

Following an investigation, the Ministry of Labour determined that Rauth Roofing Limited failed to ensure that either a guardrail system or protective covering was used to prevent the worker from falling through the work surface.

As a result, Rauth Roofing was fined $100,000 in a Windsor court on Thursday and is also expected to pay a 25% victim fine surcharge, as required by the Provincial Offences Act.

The Ministry of Labour previously issued five orders to the roofing company back in 2016, including installing adequate floor covering and guard rails, securing the top and bottom of the access ladder and installing bump lines
