Masse Invites Prime Minister To Sandwich Towne

Windsor West MP Brian Masse has extended an invitation to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to visit Sandwich Towne in his riding.

Masse has been very vocal about how money from the community benefits fund for the Gordie Howe International Bridge should go to the community.

The invitation is also extended to Transport Minister Marc Garneau and Infrastructure Minister Amarjeet Sohi.

It is not a social invitation. Masse says he wants the federal officials to see why the benefits are needed first hand.

"Sandwich Towne is literally surrounded by billions of dollars of infrastructure, investment, and crown corporations that receive, or continue to receive government funding and support," says Masse in a release Tuesday. "In fact, everyone is getting rich, except for the people that live there."

On Monday, Campaign 2000 released child poverty figures for all of Canada's federal ridings. In Windsor West, a report by the anti-poverty group re-affirmed earlier statistics that say a third of the riding's children live in poverty.

"Community Benefit Funds are immediately available -- However, they have not been released," wrote Masse in a letter to the prime minister.

Masse also wants the money earmarked for Sandwich Towne to become a permanent source of funding.

"I am once again reaching out to ask that you make the people of Sandwich Towne a priority. Being 15th on the list of Child Poverty by Federal Ridings by Campaign 2000 should signal a need that without immediate action, residents in Sandwich Towne are only going to fall more behind. It is time for your government to step up and help these citizens," wrote Masse.
