Fiat Chrysler is recalling nearly 5-million vehicles over an issue that could prevent drivers from turning off their cruise-control.
FCA says the recall list includes the Windsor-built 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica minivan. The automaker says it has to upgrade software in the powertrain control modules to allow drivers to cancel cruise-control in case of an acceleration or short-circuit problem.
Fiat Chrysler says cruise control acceleration can still be overpowered by braking or shifting into neutral.
FCA says it is unaware of any related injuries or accidents involving the affected vehicles.
“Notwithstanding the extraordinary circumstances that must exist before a customer would experience a problem, we are taking this action because we are fully committed to vehicle safety,” says Mark Chernoby, chief technical compliance officer and head of vehicle safety & regulatory compliance – NAFTA. “We have a remedy and a widespread network of engaged dealers who are preparing to deliver service.
“We urge customers to follow the instructions on their recall notices,” Chernoby adds.
The automaker says the repair is free and the affected customers will be alerted as early as next week.
