Unifor Local 444 President: Membership Still Trusts Leadership

The president of Unifor Local 444 says he still has confident in his team after two tentative deals were rejected by casino workers.

Dave Cassidy says he's confident the current bargaining committee can reach a new tentative deal with Caesars Windsor, and adds the membership still trusts their leadership.

Cassidy says he is not worried about being legislated back to work.

"The government hasn't interfered at all at this point, and this is not an essential service," says Cassidy.

Cassidy says he has reached out to everybody involved in the talks to get back to the negotiating table.

Striking casino workers rejected the latest deal by almost 53% on Friday because they did not like that the contract was for four years. The strike is the longest in casino history, and is in its 47th day.

Cassidy says he is not worried about replacement workers.

"If they think they're going to bring scabs in there, then we have a bigger issue, and we'll have all of Unifor and the labour community to help us out there," he says.

Cassidy says the executive committee is meeting Tuesday afternoon to go over proposals and strategy, but one thing he can say for certain is that the next offer will not be four years.

"All the players that need to be there are there. So, if we can get this done, I'll be one happy president when we get this in the barn," Cassidy says.
