What's Open And Closed In Windsor-Essex On Victoria Day?

Many people in Windsor-Essex are enjoying the Victoria Day weekend, considered by many to be the unofficial start of a Canadian summer.

Victoria Day commemorates the birthday of the British monarch who reigned when Canada celebrated confederation in 1867. Canada is the only former British realm with a statutory holiday honouring her.

To that end, many local institutions will be closed or on reduced hours Monday.

All federal, provincial and municipal offices will be closed on Victoria Day, including Canada Post, all city and town halls and Service Ontario. Residents can still purchase licence plate renewals and perform selected transactions online.

All banks and financial institutions are closed Monday.

All three of Windsor-Essex's major public school boards will not have classes Victoria Day. The University of Windsor and all St. Clair College campuses will also be closed.

All LCBO outlets and Beer Store locations will be closed, with regular hours resuming Tuesday.

All Windsor Public Library and Essex County Library branches will be closed Monday. Summer hours for the Windsor library system begin on Tuesday, with information here.

Devonshire Mall will be open 11am to 6pm Monday, and Tecumseh Mall will be open noon to 5pm. The Windsor Crossing outlet mall will be open 10am to 6pm.

The 311 call centre will be closed Victoria Day, while the 211 line will be answered throughout Windsor-Essex 24 hours a day.

In Windsor, Old City Hall is closed Monday, but the City Clerk's office will be open Tuesday from 8:30am to noon only for those wanting to file candidacy papers for the October municipal election. At noon Tuesday, New City Hall will open.

Residential garbage collection in Windsor will not take place Monday and will be delayed one day. Night commercial collection will take place as usual. The public garbage and household chemical waste drop-off depot at Central Ave. and E.C. Row will be closed.

There will be no parking enforcement in Windsor on Monday, and all metered parking will be free. All parking enforcement offices are closed, but payments can still be made online.

All Windsor community centres and arenas will be closed Victoria Day with the exception of previously-scheduled rentals. All customer care centres will be closed.

All indoor pools will be closed. However, the Windsor International Aquatic and Training Centre will be open from 10am to 4pm for open adult and fit lanes, and the fitness centre will be open 6am to 8pm.

Adventure Bay Family Water Park will be open 10am to 8pm Monday.

The Chimczuk Museum and Francois Baby House in Windsor are closed Monday, their normal day off.

Transit Windsor buses will run on a Sunday-holiday schedule on Victoria Day. The tunnel bus to Detroit will run on a normal weekday schedule.

In Tecumseh, there will be no transit service. Yard waste will be collected as usual on Monday. Tecumseh Arena will be open for regularly-scheduled rentals.
