Impact Of Meridian Fire Spreads To Windsor Engine Plant

Officials with Ford Canada hope to be back up and running at full capacity after the long weekend as a fire at a plant in Michigan continues to impact local production.

In addition to temporary layoffs at the Essex Engine Plant, Unifor Local 200 President John D'Angolo says now workers at the Windsor Engine Plant are being affected too.

"The Windsor Engine Plant is down until Wednesday," he says.

Essex Engine had workers off the job last Thursday and Friday. The line is down again on the day and afternoon shifts Thursday after partial shifts throughout this past week.

Trades and machining workers have not been impacted and continue to work at the plants.

The fire on May 2 at the Meridian Lightweight Technologies in Eaton Rapids, Michigan has halted production on the F-150 pickup truck and the company's Superduty models at plants in Missouri and Tennessee. The Windsor plants supply V-8 engines to those plants.

Unifor Local 200 represents a total of 1,350 members at the two plants in Windsor.
