Windsor Mayor Cites Security For Blocking People From His Social Media

Mayor Drew Dilkens is responding to an integrity commissioner complaint filed against him.

Dilkens admits he hass blocked six of 230,000 Windsorites on his social media accounts for security reasons.

Jon Liedtkie, a downtown business owner, says the mayor broke the city's code of conduct by blocking him and preventing him from participating in public discourse.

Dilkens says he doesn't block people just because they disagree with him.

"One person threatened to come into my office and have a bleed-in because we don't offer free sanitary napkins in the women's washroom and went downhill from there," says Dilkens.

Dilkens blames a recent rash of complaints filed with the integrity commissioner on the election season that is underway.

"Mister Liedtkie has been blocked for more than a year on my Twitter account and he's known that, but he's chosen this particular time and made a media event of it but I think the public in this city is smart and they can see what's going on," the mayor says.

Dilkens says he welcomes the investigation but has to protect himself, his family and city staff.

"It becomes degrading, bullying, intimidating and harassment and I have to consider not just my own security and my family's but I have to consider the security of employees at city hall and our staff," Dilkens says.

Dilkens says he feels comfortable with his approach and adds it's possible that he will unblock some people over time depending on the circumstances.

He says it costs money for the integrity commissioner to investigate and report to council and adds the taxpayers will judge for themselves if these complaints are a waste of their money.

The mayor says the complaints are not a distraction from conducting city business.

He says he handles and manages all of his own social media accounts.
