Windsor Teacher Accused Of Misconduct Loses Credentials

A former Windsor-Essex teacher accused of misconduct with students has lost his licence to teach.

The Ontario College of Teachers (OCT), the provincial regulatory body that oversees all of the province's teachers in publicly-funded boards, says in a ruling that former Greater Essex County District School Board teacher John Anthony Nabben failed to pay his dues to the college, which has resulted in a suspension of his teaching credentials.

The ruling was effective April 19.

Nabben worked as a drama teacher for the public board from 2006 until he was fired in 2016 over allegations of verbally abusing students. A check of the public board's website showed that Nabben last taught at the Walkerville Centre for the Creative Arts, although it is standard practice for the OCT to specify the school board only.

The OCT had requested that Nabben appears before a disciplinary committee in Toronto to respond to the allegations, with a right to legal counsel.

Nabben was accused of using profanity and exhibiting repeated bullying behaviour to students. At least six students, who are not named, came forward.

One accused Nabben of telling her that her theatrical monologue was "not sexual enough", then mocked her when she performed it again according to his direction.

Nabben also allegedly told another student to stop dating her boyfriend and that he would not cast her in any shows unless she broke up with him.

He was also accused of sending inappropriate text messages to students, providing his personal contact information and email account to students, as well as discussing students’ personal lives. Nabben also allegedly told off-colour or racially-insensitive jokes.
