University Honoured For Hydro Conservation

In the spirit of Earth Day, the University of Windsor is being recognized for responsible electricity use.

The university was a recipient of the GreenSTAR Award from EnWin Utilities for its efforts to conserve resources and maintain environmental sustainability. The award was presented to the university during a press conference Thursday at the University of Windsor Welcome Centre.

The GreenSTAR Award is presented by the utility to customers who make a difference in conserving energy.

The award comes with a $158,690 rebate cheque, for saving over 885,400 kWh of hydro during 2017.

Jeff Scott, EnWin's key accounts and outreach manager, says his primary responsibility is working with their most prominent customers to find ways in avoiding hydro waste, as well as strive for capital incentives for energy-saving programs.

"These programs are basically a way for electricity users in the province to obtain funding for offsetting those capital expenditures associated with energy projects with one single goal in mind, use less electricity."

U of W president Dr Alan Wildeman says he's proud of the school's collaborative effort to reduce its carbon footprint.

"Everybody's very committed to trying to make the University of Windsor campus a place that really can be held up as an example for doing what we can to apply new technology, new innovation to environmental sustainability," says Wildeman.

Wildeman adds that it's also the responsibility of the student body to do their part in energy conservation.

This is the second GreenSTAR Award EnWin has presented to the university. EnWin says the amount of hydro the school saved in 2017 is enough to power 105 homes.

U of W has been recognized by the Princeton Review's Guide to 353 Green Colleges as one of North America's "greenest" universities.
