Rally To Support Caesars Workers Sunday

Across the street from where they have been picketing each day since April 6, workers at Caesars Windsor will hold a rally at the Windsor Riverfront Festival Plaza.

The rally is expected to get underway Sunday at 11am.

Guest speakers include Unifor National President, Jerry Dias and Bob Orr, the union's national secretary-treasurer.

The event comes just days after talks between the casino and the workers' union, Unifor Local 444 briefly picked up again, and ended just as abruptly.

"After a couple of hours they came back and said they are not interested in anything we presented," said Unifor Local 444 President, James Stewart on Wednesday.

Since then, there has been no movement to continue bargaining.

"I don't think the ball is in our court," said Stewart. "I think we presented something to them and they've done nothing in return."

The workers, which include dealers, housekeepers, cooks, and janitors have been off the job since April 5 after rejecting a tentative contract in a ratification vote.

At that time, Caesars Windsor postponed all shows, events, meetings and conventions, and cancelled hotel reservations for April.

A strike in 2004 lasted six weeks.
