ERCA Issues Flood Watch Due To High Winds

The Essex Region Conservation Authority has issued a flood watch for the region due to high winds expected over the next couple of days.

Wind gusts of up to 60 km/hr could cause flooding and shoreline erosion along the already elevated waterways of Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair.

"The potential areas most significantly impacted along the Lake Erie shoreline are the north and east sides of Pelee Island and the southeast shoreline of the Municipality of Leamington between Wheatley Harbour and the tip Point Pelee," the ERCA says in a statement issued Monday afternoon. "The potential areas most significantly impacted along the shoreline of Lake St. Clair are the western portions of the Town of Lakeshore, the Town of Tecumseh and the eastern portions of the City of Windsor."

People should take extra caution and avoid shoreline areas. Waves overtopping breakwalls/shorelines can be extremely dangerous. Standing water can also present its own unseen hazards. Children, pets and livestock should be kept away from flowing water, standing water and breakwall/shoreline areas.

The flood watch will remain in effect until Wednesday at noon.
