Men-Only Rule Goes To Caboto Executive

A statement from the Caboto Club says it will continue the discussion about its men-only rule after its board of directors met Thursday.

The meeting was just the first step toward reviewing the controversial rule which led Premier Kathleen Wynne moving her town hall meeting in Windsor to St. Clair Centre for the Arts Thursday night.

Following the meeting, a statement was released to the media which read, "We are well aware of the concerns of the community. We have had an in-depth discussion on it tonight, and we will continue this dialogue with our members, including the president of the Italian women's club."

The controversy raised its head again last week when Progressive Conservative MPP Lisa MacLeod questioned by the Premier's team had booked the event at the Caboto Club.

"What kind of message does this send to little girls," wrote MacLeod after learning the club does not allow female members.

Since then, pressure has been steadily growing on the club to change the rule. The Windsor and District Labour Council has asked its member unions to reconsider booking events there, and Bill Marra, a city councillor, has said he may end his membership if women are not allowed to become members with voting rights at the Caboto Club.

Last weekend, Dino Chiodo and Matt Marchand, both members, met with General Manager, Ron Moro initiating the discussion Thursday night.

The general assembly is expected to meet later this month.
