Labour Council Now Pressuring Caboto Club

Members of the executive board at the Caboto Club in Windsor face ever-growing pressure to change their men-only rule.

The latest pressure comes from the Windsor and District Labour Council.

It's women's committee has asked unions represented on the council to rethink whether they want to spend money with an organization that does not share the values of equality and social progress.

President Brian Hogan says years ago, the council decided to consider other clubs first when booking an event, but the new motion goes a step further. It asks member unions to do the same.

"We would encourage our unions to look carefully how they spend their money," Hogan says. "Does their money go towards organizations that match what labour council stands for?"

The board meets Thursday to talk about whether it should ask its general assembly to extend membership to women.

The rule, which bars women from membership and voting on policy, has been a point of contention in the community for years but boiled to the surface recently when Premier Kathleen Wynne cancelled a town hall meeting there.

The town hall will be held at 7pm Thursday at the St. Clair Centre for the Arts instead.

The general assembly at the Caboto Club meets later this month.
