Snow Emergency Declared In Windsor

The City of Windsor has declared a snow emergency and is asking residents to help with the cleanup efforts.

A news release states that up to 30cm of snow has fallen since the storm began Friday and more is expected throughout Saturday.

It is reported that city crews will continue salting and plowing the main roads and residential streets throughout the city. It is expected that the clearing of residential streets will not be completed until sometime Monday.

The city is asking residents to remove cars from residential streets and park them in driveways. According to the release, all arenas, community centres, and other municipal parking lots are being cleared to allow residents to park free of charge for the time being.

Residents are also advised to slow down and stay in control on the roads. It is recommended that drivers leave plenty of time to reach their destination safely.

The city adds that a bylaw prohibits residents from shoveling snow back onto the street while cleaning their sidewalks and driveways, because it creates unsafe road conditions. The city's sidewalk bylaw does require residents, however, to clear the sidewalks around their property. This bylaw will go in to effect after the snow emergency has ended.

Windsor Fire and Rescue Services is also asking residents to keep fire hydrants clear of snow to ensure easy access for firefighters in the event of a fire.
