City Council Clears Path To Tear Down Iona College-Stuart MacDonald House

If the University of Windsor wants to tear down a historic landmark on campus, city council will not stop it.

Councillors were asked Monday night whether to give the Iona College/Stuart MacDonald House a heritage designation, and they voted no.

The University of Windsor wants to tear it down and use the property for green space on campus.

University spokesman John Coleman says fixing it up will be too expensive.

"We had a construction company come in, and I think anybody would agree it's a great deal of money," he says. "We have to be careful about how we spend money."

Previous estimates put the cost of repairs at the $3-million mark.

Coleman could not provide a timeline for when the building will be demolished.

It was built in 1924 and has been on the heritage registry since 2008.
