Sunday night is going to be an exciting one for former Windsor man, Joao Carvelho.
The former student at F.J. Brennan High School is nominated for a Grammy in the Best Engineered Album - Non-Classical category for Natural Conclusion, an album he produced for Canadian folk-pop singer-songwriter Rose Cousins.
He calls the nomination a surprise.
"It was very unexpected, very surreal," remembers Carvelho. "Rose Cousins texted me that day it was announced -- she kept the text going not telling me what was going on because I wasn't expecting it at all. Eventually, my phone started blowing up with texts."
Carvelho says his career in music started at F.J. Brennan.
"Mr. [Ed] Jones, in the music department, encouraged us. He sort of wouldn't take no for an answer getting his class to really dive in and form a real appreciation for music," he says. "As a younger person, I started listening and listening and then became a huge fan."
It is Carvelho's first nomination, but he has worked with a number of high-profile Canadian artists including Rush, Sheepdogs, and Sloan.
"Rush was just another one of those bands that were one of our idols. I grew up playing Rush covers. So, to go from that of thinking of this band as this iconic band, and then all of a sudden, they're parking in my parking lot," he says. "Is this really happening? They are very cool. I'm such a fortunate guy."
Carvelho's studio, Joao Carvelho Mastering, is based in Toronto.
