Windsor Regional's ORs Back Up and Running

All operating rooms at Windsor Regional Hospital's Metropolitan campus are functional.

Two of the hospital's operating rooms were put out of commission last week after an HVAC problem resulted in flooding, resulting in a shifting of schedules and staff to cut the effect on patients.

Windsor Regional Hospital president and CEO David Musyj says in an email to staff that a temporary fix for the operating room situation was working well and will be in place until replacement parts come in two weeks' time.

Musyj praised hospital staff for keeping things running under trying circumstances.

"The nursing, MDRD, OR unit aides, OR booking office, management and professional staff all pitched in and worked together to accommodate our patients and spending considerable hours during the peak/flood and after getting things back to 'normal'," says Musyj in the email.

The trouble was caused Sunday when an air-handling system connected to the two operating rooms broke down, and air from extreme cold outside froze the pipes. Once the heat was turned up, the flooding occurred, and leaks in the coils were discovered.

Contingency plans were put in place to move surgeons, anesthesiologists and staff to ORs at the Met and Ouellette campuses to keep surgery disruption to a minimum.
