Detroit Auto Show Now Open to Public (GALLERY)

The world's sleekest new rides are now ready for the stares of a wide-eyed public in the Motor City.

The 2018 North American International Auto Show opens to the public Saturday at Detroit's Cobo Center. Since the show went international in scope in the late 1980s, the Detroit exposition has taken its place as one of the most prestigious auto shows in the world.

Over 5,000 journalists from all over the world, plus thousands of industry professionals, wandered the show floor this week. Now the average gearhead on the street will have their turn.

As always, many of the world's top automakers used the Detroit show to show off brand new models, as well as hold world-premiere reveals of concept cars.

Detroit's Big Three automakers, General Motors, Ford and Chrysler, continue to use a good chunk of the vast floor space to display their latest vehicles.

Among the most prominent attractions at this year's show is a state-of-the-art, modern reproduction of the Ford Mustang Bullitt, the vehicle used in the 1968 Steve McQueen film. McQueen's granddaughter was in Detroit this week to help unveil it during press and industry previews. Ford is hoping to have the vehicle in production this fall.

The show is used as a backdrop for the announcement of awards for vehicles on display. Honda's popular midsize, the Accord, received the prize for North American Car of the Year. The 2018 Lincoln Navigator took the award for the best truck, and the Volvo XC60 was named Utility Vehicle of the Year.

The show runs through Sunday, January 28. The official NAIAS website has complete show information.
