The Rental Scam Is Back

The Windsor Police Financial Crimes Unit has advice for anyone looking for an apartment after receiving calls about the so-called rental scam.

Police say the scammers pose as a landlord, posting an ad for a property for rent. They actually have no connection to the property and tell any responders they are out of the country and cannot meet in person. Sometimes, they pressure whoever responds to the ad by saying time is short, and they need the money or personal banking information immediately.

Investigators say it pays to do your research by searching online to see if the property has ever been listed previously for sale or rent. Scammers have been known to use old ads. If you find another post, call the landlord or agent to confirm the apartment is actually for rent again.

Insist on meeting with the landlord to see the apartment in person, and review the lease or contract thoroughly.

Finally, never send money or your personal banking information to strangers. Online transfers can go anywhere in the world and be very difficult to trace.

If you have provided your personal information, call Equifax or Transunion.
