35% Windsor-Essex Residents Don't Have Dental Insurance

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit is trying to find out what residents face when it comes to getting dental care.

It is rolling out a new online survey. It is available until March 2 and is available in English, French, Arabic, Spanish and Chinese. Those that don't have access to the internet can call the health unit at 519-258-2146 ext. 3212 to have a copy mailed to them.

According to the 2013 Canadian Community Health Survey by Statistics Canada, 35% of Windsor-Essex residents 18-years and older have no form of dental coverage. Another 28% visit the dentist less than once a year for a checkup or only for emergencies.

"The goal of the survey is to learn more about residents' oral health and issues they face in getting care for their teeth and mouths," Health Promotion Specialist Shannen Janisse. "We know this issue affects adults and seniors with low income, but we think there is more to it. There may be individuals in the community who may have a job, but don't have enough dental insurance to cover things like tooth extractions and root canals."

There are no provincial dental care programs for adults and seniors living with low income. Programs like Ontario Works and the Ontario Disability Support Program provide some support, but often do not cover the cost of routine checkups and cleanings.

The health unit receives several calls a week from people who can not afford dental care. The concern is access to oral health care will become more challenging as the population ages and seniors retire without dental benefits.
