An apartment fire in Windsor has three residents looking for alternate shelter from the cold.
Windsor Police say firefighters responded to a call at an apartment house on Ouellette Ave near Shepherd St. around 11:30am Saturday.
Fire officials say there was a lot of smoke and flames when crews arrived. The fire apparently began in an eating area of one of the units. Damage to the unit is estimated at $80,000 with additional damage of $70,000 to the building itself.
The blaze was brought under control around noon, though firefighters continued to tackle stubborn hot spots for some time after.
All residents were evacuated safely but one was taken to hospital with minor smoke inhalation, Windsor Fire says. A firefighter was injured when a dog bit him in the face. Both have been treated for their injuries and released.
Two transit buses were brought to the scene to shelter residents from frigid temperatures.
The displaced residents are being helped by the Canadian Red Cross, according to Windsor Fire.
