Windsor Police RIDE Programs Underway

Windsor police say that if you party this Christmas weekend, you'd better not be driving.

The Windsor Police Service (WPS) has been teaming up this week with Amherstburg police to set up Festive RIDE program checkpoints in the city and county, hoping to keep impaired or high drivers off the streets over Christmas.

RIDE programs were set up on Wednesday and Thursday evenings according to the WPS official Facebook page. From these, officers interviewed 265 drivers. Five roadside sobriety tests were conducted over the two-night span and two enforcement actions were issued.

The weekend RIDE checks will begin Friday evening, with traffic expected to be heavier than usual as Christmas weekend gets underway. Windsor and Amherstburg police say for this weekend they will be focusing on the western half of Essex County, bounded by the city of Windsor on the north and the town of Amherstburg on the south.

Police remind those celebrating the holidays to drink responsibly and never get behind the wheel of a car while drunk or high. Designate a driver, call a cab or Uber, use public transport or spend the night wherever you may be celebrating.
