Vigil to Remember Deceased Children

A vigil is being held Sunday night to remember children taken way too soon.

The Canadian Mental Health Association Windsor-Essex County branch is sponsoring its ninth annual candlelight service to remember children who have passed away. The vigil will take place at the Fogolar Furlan Club in Windsor.

This vigil is held in conjunction with the Compassionate Friends Worldwide Candle Lighting, taking place for the last 20 years around the world on the second Sunday in December.

Colleen Campo, bereavement specialist with the CMHA Windsor-Essex chapter, says it's part of the association's efforts to help those grieving the loss of a loved one or friend. She says it is also important for parents of deceased children to understand that they are not alone.

“For many families this is an opportunity to come together to openly mourn their child who died,” says Campo. in a press release. “For those whose pain is new it is a safe place to come together with others who feel the same loss.”

Those attending the Sunday night vigil will be lighting candles in honour of those who have died. There will also be a memory table with photos brought by families and friends and families will say the names of their deceased children out loud.

The vigil begins at 6:30pm.

A comprehensive adult bereavement program is one of many valuable services offered by the local CMHA.
