Dilkens Looks To Establish Asian Village

Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens is looking to create a new themed district in the city.

He'd like to see the city emphasize the Asian culture prominent along Wyandotte St. W between the University of Windsor and downtown.

"That area is already full of Asian type businesses. So this is the city pulling together some of the things that would be more of a city responsibility than an individual business owner responsibility to see if we can create something bigger than what's there today," says Dilkens.

Dilkens says he's spoken to many representatives in the area and they're all for the idea. It could include creating gateways for the area, and improved streetscaping similar to what has been done along Erie St.

"The goal here is to create something that's great for the people who live here and enhance the quality of life but it's also about improving economic development and creating a theme and a district that helps that area becoming even bigger and more than what it is there today," says Dilkens.

A budget for the project has not been finalized as planning has only just begun.
