Erie Shores Healthcare has been named tops in the province for surgery wait times by Cancer Care Ontario.
The Leamington hospital provided quick access to a specialist for new cancer patients and fast surgical treatment. The hospital also met the targets for quickly diagnosing breast cancer within weeks of a tissue biopsy.
CEO Janice Dawson says the recognition is significant.
"The attainment of ‘top performer’ in the province for the Cancer Care Ontario measures is a testament to the immense efficiencies of the diagnostic department and the clinical team collaboration at Erie Shores HealthCare," says Dawson. "The recent investment of more than $3.2-million to the Women’s Centre for breast screening’s 3D Mammography, Ultrasound, state-of- the-art CT scanner and facility upgrades has contributed to this achievement."
According to the 2016 Ontario Cancer Screening Performance Report, the number of people newly diagnosed with cancer in Ontario has increased over the last two decades and will continue to rise, largely due to an aging population. Breast and colorectal cancer are among the most commonly diagnosed cancers in Ontario and can be prevented or detected earlier by regular screening.
