Cycling enthusiasts can now take advantage of a new off-road path in Tecumseh, thanks to a provincial investment.
The new 3.5 km biking and walking trail, which opened to the public on Saturday as part of the Rotary (1918) Centennial Hub, connects to the existing Herb Grey Parkway Trail and the Trans Canada Trail.
"This new path will now connect you with other cycling trails in this region – making cycling safer and more easily accessible for locals and tourists alike," says Steven Del Duca, minister of transportation, in a news release. "We are committed to continue working together with our local municipalities and the cycling community to build the infrastructure that will make Ontario a cycling leader in North America."
The project was made possible by a $325,000 investment from the Ontario Municipal Cycling Infrastructure, which is a $10-million cycling infrastructure program that funds 50% of eligible project costs, up to $325,000. The province announced its cycling strategy in 2013 to promote safe cycling and encourage more people to ride their bikes to work, school and recreation destinations.
According to the Ministry of Transportation, Ontario has over 80,000 km of trails, which is the second largest network of trails in Canada.
