Decorative Arch For Sandwich Towne Goes To Council

At the cost of over $300,000, a proposal to build a decorative arch over Sandwich St. is going to Windsor city council Monday night.

The city's planning, heritage, and economic development standing committee approved the report last week.

If council approves the proposal, city planner Adam Coates has said it could go up soon.

"The manufacturer is able to manufacture it off-site, and erect it quite quickly," he told BlackburnNews.com.

The arch would connect Patterson Park on one side of Sandwich St., with McKee Park on the opposite side, near Russell St. It would compliment the new roundabout which is still under construction at Sandwich St. and University Ave. W.

Work on the roundabout is expected to finish soon after an archeological dig delayed the project by two months.

Once the project has approval, the city would then go to the public to find 14 stories of historical significance to showcase on plaques on the limestone abutments.

Proponents of the project decided to seek city council's blessing before budget deliberations.

The history of Sandwich Towne predates the City of Windsor. It was settled in 1797 and was annexed by Windsor in 1935.
