Medical Laboratories Of Windsor Employees On Strike

A dispute over wages has led to a strike by about 90 employees at the Medical Laboratories of Windsor.

The medical lab assistants and medical lab technologists work at 11 locations throughout the city and are represented by Unifor Local 2458.

"We reached a tentative agreement with the employer probably about a week ago. The membership turned it down and they exercised their right to go on strike," says Unifor Local 2459 Vice President Ken Durocher.

He says the main issue on the table is wages. He says these employees have the same skills as those working in the hospital but are making significantly less money.

"The positions in the hospitals are starting close to $20 and the other ones are starting close to $30, where the lab assistants here at this work place they're starting at $13.50 an hour and the lab technologists are starting at $20.50 an hour," says Durocher.

The employees have been working without a contract since March. There are currently no talks scheduled between the two sides.
