Former Teacher To Appear For Hearing

A former Windsor teacher will soon face a hearing to address concerns about his conduct.

The Ontario College of Teachers has sent out a notice of hearing for John Nabben, previously a drama teacher in the Greater Essex County District School Board. Nabben has been asked to appear before the College's Discipline Committee.

He will have an opportunity to respond to the allegations and if he wishes, may use the services of legal counsel.

According to a 12-page notice provided by the college's official website, Nabben was a teacher in the public board from 2006 and 2016. A check of the public board's website shows that he has taught at the Walkerville Centre for the Creative Arts, though this is not disclosed in the notice.

The notice says that Nabben allegedly used profanity and made inappropriate comments to students. At least six students, who are not being identified, have accused him of bullying and otherwise improper and abusive conduct.

Specifically, Nabben is accused of telling one student that her dramatic monologue was "not sexual enough", then laughing at her when she tried to adjust her performance according to his direction.

Nabben also allegedly told another student to stop dating her boyfriend and that he would not cast her in any shows unless she broke up with him. He is also accused of sending inappropriate text messages to students, providing his personal contact information and email account to students, as well as discussing students' personal lives. The complainants also say Nabben often told off-colour or racially-insensitive jokes.

The college says Nabben was fired by the public board in June of this year.

If the committee finds Nabben guilty of professional misconduct, he could face penalties ranging from a formal reprimand, suspension of his Ontario teaching credentials with conditions, or revocation of his credentials.

A date for the hearing has not yet been set but it will be open to the public.
