Getting Married In Amherstburg? Why Not At Town Hall?

Soon, you may be able to get your wedding officiated by the clerk or deputy clerk of Amherstburg.

The town has offered marriage licenses since 2011 and sells 110 on average a year, but this will be its first foray into conducting marriage ceremonies.

A report to the town council for Monday night says the staff has had many requests to perform ceremonies.

Many other municipalities in Essex County already offer the service, including LaSalle which got into the wedding business just over a year ago. In the first six months, it conducted 103 ceremonies.

Lakeshore, Leamington, Kingsville, and Windsor all offer officiating services in addition to marriage licenses.

If councillors agree, ceremonies will be available Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 4:30pm, and on Saturdays so long as the clerk, deputy clerk or the manager of licensing and enforcement is available. They will be held either in council chambers or at King's Navy Yard Park.

A license costs a couple $117 now, and the service will cost an extra $250 during the week, while weekend services will cost $350.

The town hopes to perform at least 25 services a year.
