Samaritan's Purse Arrives To Help With Flood Cleanup

If you need some help cleaning up after the big flood, Samaritan's Purse has a disaster relief team in Windsor.

The organization, which helps residents deal with the aftermath of natural disasters across Canada and around the world, has parked a transport truck in the parking lot at Parkwood Gospel Temple on Temple Dr.

Those who need help cleaning up their basement can call 1-844-547-2664 or go to their website. The elderly, the disabled, single parents, and those without insurance are prioritized.

News Media Relations Manager Frank King says the group is also looking for volunteers.

"We are just looking for able-bodied folks who are able to get out there and do some kinda nasty work," he says. "Folks can volunteer for us for as short as a day, or they can volunteer for us for like a week if they want."

Samaritan's Purse will train volunteers and provide equipment.

Donations can be made online or by calling 1-800-663-6500.

"Bring a charitable organization, we're always talking to donors and everyone else who wants to support the work in Windsor and anywhere else in Canada," King says.

The group has a lot of experience helping out. It came to Windsor after last September's flood in the city and Tecumseh. King says three Canadian teams have assisted in all the provinces over the years, including after Fort McMurray's massive wildfire that destroyed thousands of homes and businesses, and forced the evacuation of the entire city.

"Our Calgary one [team] just came back from British Columbia. Our Ontario one is now in Windsor, and our disaster relief unit in Moncton is now down in North Carolina in anticipation of whatever damage Hurricane Irma may do," he says. "This is definitely one of our busiest years on record."

King says another team is headed to Houston, Texas after Hurricane Harvey dropped more than 1,300mm or 51 inches of rain in some areas.
